Viveiro

Viveiro
The old town is steeped in history. It is still possible to visit the three gates of the old city wall, romanesque churches, monasteries, stately homes with their splendid coats of arms, squares in which the noblest families had their houses, and narrow streets that remind us of medieval times.

There are gardens, parks, natural beauty spots and, above all, plenty of estuary and sea. What gives Viveiro its personality is its centuries old seafaring tradition. If you need to be convinced of this, just visit the Celeiro fishing port and the leisure port.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A STROLL

The walk along the banks of the River Landro

This walk, from the Viveiro by-pass to Portochao, a distance of just over 3 kilometres, takes you along the banks of the charming River Landro. We recommend you enjoy this walk any morning of the week, but particularly on a Sunday, while the first rays of the sun melt away the morning freshness.

A PICTURE POSTCARD

The beaches in summer

In the areas around Covas and Area you will have almost exclusive use of the beaches in May, June and September. In July and August it is wonderful to see lots of people enjoying the sands, although the beaches do not become overcrowded.

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

Line-caught hake from the Port of Celeiro

We strongly recommend the line-caught hake from the Port of Celeiro (Galicia Quality). This wonderful dish can be enjoyed in any of the town’s restaurants. And you can enjoy it throughout the year, especially in the fiesta of the line-caught hake, which is to be held in Celeiro on the 17th of July.

ATMOSPHERE

Holy Week

Holy Week is celebrated in the historical town centre. It begins on Holy Wednesday and continues until Easter Sunday.

UNIQUE TO VIVEIRO

The Main Square (Plaza Mayor) and the Calle (street) de Abajo

Each evening the local children get together to play in the historical town centre while their parents enjoy a chat and make new friends. Others enjoy a walk through the main commercial thoroughfare of the town.

SHOPPING

The street market

The Viveiro street market is held on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. You can also enjoy a visit to the main market (which is beside the location of the street market) on the first day and the third Sunday of each month.
