Santoña

Santoña
Santoña is surrounded by hills, marshes and an estuary. It is practically an island on terra firme. All of this gives it a strong personality which is reflected in the intense character of its people and the deep popular roots of its traditions.

The “must see” sights for visitors to Santoña include the fishing port, the leisure port and the promenade. Passing through Santoña the traveller will enjoy seeing our fortresses, our beaches, our artistic heritage and our nature reserve.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A  STROLL

The Stroll (el Pasaje)

This walk begins at the fishing port, passes through the leisure port, and finishes at the end of the promenade, alongside the Fort of San Martín. You can enjoy this walk any afternoon when the days start getting longer and when the sun begins to set behind Montehano. In the course of this walk you will be able to relax watching the calm waters of Santoña Bay and then, from the jetty, you will be enchanted by the effects of light and shade.

A PICTURE POSTCARD

The sunset  from the las Marismas lookout point.

Any day of the year it is possible to go to the top of the las Marismas lookout point and admire the view of the whole nature reserve at dusk. If you then turn round, you will be able to enjoy the view in the opposite direction. You will see how the two ports and the Monte Buciero (rocky hill) appear before your eyes. This is really spectacular.

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

Anchovies

We strongly recommend you try our anchovies in any bar or restaurant in the town. They can also be purchased in the fish canning facilities located in the municipality. Any time is the right time to try the anchovies from the Cantabrian Sea. You could try them, say, at mid morning, or as part of your apéritif, or as a snack, or, perhaps, as a great starter for a splendid dinner.

ATMOSPHERE

The San Antonio Square and the El Peralvillo Square

There is a great atmosphere in both of these squares and in the street which links them. You will have a wonderful time here during the long summer afternoons when the streets and the squares are full of people enjoying a glass of wine and some tapas in the delightful pavement cafes and restaurants.

UNIQUE TO SANTOÑA

Night time in “el Pasaje” (the stroll)

During the summer here, the tradition is to go out for a walk in the evening. From the fishing port or the  fish market, you can do the whole “Pasaje”, all the way to the 10 metre high statue of the Virgen del Puerto (Virgin of the Port), the Patron Saint of Santoña. The tradition is to touch the statue and then return.

SHOPPING

The weekly street market

The street market is held every Saturday in Santoña.  We are sure you will enjoy it.
