Ortigueira

Ortigueira
Ortigueira is a meeting place of mountains, valleys, rivers, sea and especially the estuary, the biggest “ría” in northern Galicia.

The highest mountain peaks are located near the sea, contrasting with the area around the estuary.  Ortigueira has become well known throughout the world for hosting the International Celtic World Festival.  This event, which was first held in 1978, has been declared of International Tourism Interest. It takes place in the second week of July and attracts thousands of visitors.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A STROLL

The promenade and the coastal route

We recommend you take a stroll from the leisure port to the Morouzos Beach. You can do so any time of the year. In the summer, the trees provide some very welcome shade so that you can concentrate on enjoying the views of the estuary. In autumn and winter, you can watch migrating birds flying overhead.

A PICTURE POSTCARD

Sunset from the “Garita da Vela” (look-out post)

Throughout the year, but especially on clear days, we recommend you go to the Garita da Vela, in Espasante, to watch the sun setting over the mouth of the estuary.

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

Gilthead bream, red mullet and goose barnacles

In the restaurants and “marisquerías” (seafood restaurants) in the town, we recommend you try the delicious gilthead bream, red mullet and goose barnacles. Enjoy the gilthead bream from June to September, the red mullet from August to November and the goose barnacles throughout the year.
