Llanes

Llanes
The traditional rural and seafaring character of Llanes truly reflects the nature of both the place and its people. And this character is still very much present today. It is the ideal destination for a relaxing holiday close to nature. Visitors will be charmed by its more than thirty beaches and its beautiful valleys. The cliffs and water jets that shoot out of underground galleries (known here as “bufones”) are four natural wonders. By walking or cycling along the coastal path and the network of paths you can see all these magnificent sights.

The heritage of Llanes dates back to prehistoric times and continues to modern times with the avant-garde “Cubos de la Memoria” in the fishing port.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A  STROLL

The Coastal Path

This walk begins at Bustio (Ribadedeva) and ends on the Beach of San Antolín and it can be done any time of the year. You will walk through the beautiful protected lanscape of the eastern coast. The whole walk is about 50 km long, so it is more than just a stroll. It is however possible to cover some of that distance by rail or divide it up into shorter, less strenuous stages. This way you will be able to relax and admire the beautiful cliffs and beaches you will discover along the way.

A PICTURE POSTCARD

Llanes in the Cinema

Scenes from many well known films were shot in Llanes. Among the most fondly remembered are “El Orfanato”, “El Abuelo” and the television series “La Señora”. Many more films can be remembered in the 25 unforgettable cinema sets that can be visited in Llanes.

The cinema route, which does not take in all the films shot in the municipality, takes visitors to the places where more than 42 scenes from 18 feature films, 3 television series and one short have been filmed. Here visitors can see panels showing stills and providing interesting information on the films made. For further information, visit. www.llanesdecine.com

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

Llanes cheeses

We strongly recommend the cheese boards available in the cider bars and restaurants of Llanes and the “Concejo”. These can be enjoyed at any time of the day. And if you have some cider with your cheese, even better!

The flour and the corn

Check out the local products made with corn flour. They are superb. The Corn Flour Gastronomy Feast takes place on March. If you are lucky enough to be there at that time you will be able to try delicious items such as “tortos “, “borona preñada”, “pantruque” and “bollas” (these are similar to black pudding but contain corn flour). And all of these are at mouthwateringly reasonable prices! Consult the menús

ATMOSPHERE

The fiestas

Any time is the right time for a fiesta in Llanes and in the surrounding villages. In summer the Prau Fiestas are very enjoyable. During the rest of the year, there are frequent festivals on specific themes.

UNIQUE TO LLANES

The avant garde “Cubos de la Memoria”

Agustín Ibarrola created this work of art on the concrete blocks on the jetty of the harbour at Llanes. It is a great example of public art as it combines essential elements of the artist’s work with the historical and cultural past of the town of Llanes.

Through the “Cubos de la Memoria” we can gain an insight into the memory of the artist, the memory of the art and the memory of the territory. Coloured shapes and planes mix harmoniously, breaking away from the original shape of the blocks through an expressive, unrepresentational language. The viewer is urged to participate by seeking out the various different perspectives and seeing the effects of the moment, with the subtle changes in the light, the tide and the surroundings.

SHOPPING

The weekly street market

We suggest you come along to the Llanes Mercáu (street market). It takes place every Tuesday. There are also markets in Posada every Friday and in Nueva every Saturday.
