Lekeitio

Lekeitio
The people of Lekeitio have been sculpting their town on the cliffs for almost eight centuries.

The town of Lekeitio blends in perfectly with its local surroundings. The town looks onto the sea and the old historical part talks to us of it traditions of fishing and craftsmanship. Here you will find charming big houses, towers and monasteries along its narrow cobbled streets. The port is a hive of activity. Visitors will enjoy watching the fishing boats unloading their catches and seeing the nets being mended.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A  STROLL

The Santa Katalina Lighthouse

Start the walk at the Port of Txatxo Kaia and then walk along the lovely San Juan Talako Street where you will see the hermitage. After that, walk along the Paseo de Santa Katalina until you come to the lighthouse which, by the way, is had become a “Centre of Interpretation of Navigation”.

A PICTURE POSTCARD

The waves

When the sea is rough, the powerful high waves break against the port`s breakwater and the island. In spring and summer, we recommend you spend a late afternoon admiring the view from San Juan. You will see our town looking much more peaceful and relaxed.

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

The fruits of the sea

Lekeitio is a coastal village and, not surprisingly, fresh fish is a key item in our local dishes. We recommend anchovies, bonito (which is similar to tuna fish), mackerel, monkfish, hake and cuttlefish. Either oven-roasted or in a sauce, the considerable merits of our cuisine can be appreciated in restaurants, “txokos” and homes.

ATMOSPHERE

The village square

You will enjoy a stroll in our main square whenever the sun comes out. You may like to be out in the sun or you may prefer to walk in the shade produced by the lime trees. And from the square you will certainly be charmed by the views of the port, the “quay of the priests” and the Island of San Nicolás, to which it is possible to walk when the tide is out.

UNIQUE TO LEKEITIO

The Fiesta of the Geese

A very old seafarers’ traditional fiesta is held on 5th September. The villagers dress in dark blue and, in the afternoon, go along to the port for a rowing competition. And the winners receive a goose.
