Gijón

Gijón
Gijón is a top class nautical tourism destination. It looks over the Cantabrian Sea. In Gijón you may bask in the sun on its beautiful white sands, enjoy water sports, go out on a sailing ship or live the town’s maritime history by taking a stroll through its beautiful leisure port. In Cimavilla you will discover the special atmosphere of an authentic seafarers’ district.

The town has developed its relationship with the sea by upgrading older features and building new ones: the Poniente beach, the Cape Torres lighthouse, the Cervigón footpath, the aquarium and the Talasoponiente Health and Leisure Centre.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A STROLL

The coastal path

We begin this walk on the Poniente beach  and then we go through the leisure port, Cimavilla and the Santa Catalina Park, to the San Lorenzo beach and finally we come to the beach of La Nora. If the tide is low we will also be able to take a dip in the Cantabrian Sea. Or we could just enjoy an apéritif at any of the pavement cafés we will find on the way.

A PICTURE POSTCARD

Dusk in the port and Cimavilla

The most seafaring parts of Gijón are probably the area in and around the harbour, which until recently  was a fishing port and has now become a leisure port, and the Cimavilla area, the old fishing district which is now dedicated to tourism and other leisure activities and maintains all the full flavour of the seafaring town.

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

Cider and “oricios” (sea urchins)

Throughout the year, the cider bars and café bars in the town and its rural parishes serve this typical drink -  at any time of the day and to all types of clientèle. Winter is the season for eating sea urchins. The locals love to eat them while enjoying a glass of cider.

ATMOSPHERE

The café bars, known locally as “merenderos”

Scattered around the town and surrounding rural parishes, such as Santurio, Cabueñes, Deva, Somió, and Mareo,  these friendly little bars give us the pleasure of being outside, although this is of course more enjoyable in Spring, Summer and Autumn.

UNIQUE TO GIJÓN

A visit to the aquarium

If you visit Gijón and you love the sea and marine life, we strongly recommend you visit our rather unusual aquarium. It is a kind of model of the Cantabrian Coast, showing just how close the sea is to the mountains. In the aquarium you will see beautiful marine species, presented in an original way.

SHOPPING

The weekly street market and the crafts market

You can enjoy a visit to the Gijón street market every Sunday.
If you also wish to enjoy an ecological / crafts market you should go to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square) in the second week-end of the month.
