Getaria

Getaria
Getaria has traditionally had a sailing vocation; for hundreds of years the town’s economy was based on whaling and Getaria is now one of the major inshore fishing ports on the Basque Coast.
It has a leisure port and, in addition,  its beaches are ideal for such water sports as sailing, swimming, canoeing and surfing.
The “txakolí de Getaria”, a fruity white wine, goes very well with any fish dish.

IF YOU FEEL LIKE A STROLL

The pedestrian path from Zarautz to Getaria

A PICTURE POSTCARD

Dusk

We recommend you check out the view in the late afternoon from any of the viewpoints on San Antón or Ratón, an island that is linked to the town.

A FEAST FOR THE PALATE

Txakolí

Txakoli de Getaria is superb with fresh grilled fish and seafood. It is available in all the restaurants in Getaria.

ATMOSPHERE

The fiestas of San Salvador

We are sure you will enjoy the fiestas of San Salvador, with their reenactment  of the landing of Elcano (every 4 years). And please try not to miss the fiestas of San Antón. In these fiestas you will be able to taste the first txakolí wine of the year at the D.O. wineries.

UNIQUE TO GETARIA

The Old Town

The locals love to go down through the old town, passing through the tunnel in which the chapel-crypt of La Piedad is located, and under the parish church until they reach Artzape, from where they can enjoy watching the harbour, the sea, the weather and the boats, while they have a pleasant chat.

AND FOR LOVERS OF GOOD FOOD

The “Bonito” week (bonito is similar to tuna fish)

The Bonito week takes place in Getaria every two years in July.
